Functions of Upazila Parishad
The second schedule of the Upazila Parishad Act, 1997 mentions the following functions of the Upazila Parishad:
To make five year and different term development plan.
To implement the programs of various government departments handed over to the council and to supervise and coordinate the activities of those departments.
Construction, repair and maintenance of inter-union connecting roads.Adoption and implementation of small scale irrigation projects in the Upazila Parishad as directed by the government to ensure optimum use of surface water resources.Ensuring public health, nutrition and family planning services.Improvement of sanitation and sewerage system and provision of potable drinking water supply.(A) provide incentives and support for the expansion of education at the upazila level; (B) Supervise the activities of the concerned institutions and provide assistance to them in order to improve the quality of secondary education and madrasa education activities.Activities for the establishment and development of cottage and small scale industries.To provide assistance and co-ordinate the work of co-operative societies and non-governmental voluntary organizations.To provide and implement support for women, children, social welfare and youth, sports and cultural activities.Adoption and implementation of activities in the development of agriculture, livestock, fisheries and forest resources.Discuss the activities of the police department including the improvement of law and order situation in the upazila and send regular reports to the higher authorities.To create self-employment and to provide necessary assistance to the government in taking, implementing and implementing government programs on its own initiative for poverty alleviation.Coordinating and inspecting the development activities of the Union Parishad and providing necessary assistance.Taking other preventive measures including creating public opinion against the organization of crimes like violence against women and children.Taking other preventive measures including creation of public opinion against the organization of crimes like terrorism, theft, robbery, smuggling, drug use etc.To undertake other activities including social forestry for the purpose of environmental protection and development.Other functions assigned by the Government from time to time.
