Details
The North Bengal State Railway Company launched the first railway service in British India in 1853. Then, in 179 AD, the work of extending the railway from Kolkata to Pabartipur in the north to provide relief during the famine began. In the same year a meter gauge railway was extended from Parbatipur to Kaunia via Rangpur city. Later it was associated with Lalmonirhat.As it was not possible to build a bridge over the river Teesta at that time, a steam-powered ferry was arranged to cross the river. Then the railway bridge over the river Teesta was built in 1899-1900 AD. When the bridge was damaged during the 1971 war of independence, spans, girders and other equipment were procured from another bridge and repaired in 1982.
